Networks
All our systems is based on standard computer networks. The software uses TCP/IP and UDP/IP protocols. All traffic is routable and does not depend on broadcasting. This means is can be integrated in a shared network together with office traffic like email, database and internet.

Large customers, like StatoilHydro and Norwegian Navy uses existing computer networks to integrate the VTMS3000 sensors. This lowers installation cost. StatoilHydro has 50 radars, 50 Traffic Displays, 20 VHF radios and a multiple of servers coexisting in a mixed network with process control, email, file shares, offshore CCTV, etc.

Often designing the network part of a VTS system is more challenging than the VTS system itself. Remote sensor locations sometimes requires a mix of links. For turn key projects VisSim designs and supply the network. The network can be a mix of:

  • Local Area Ethernet
  • Microwave Links
  • Fibreoptical Links
  • Leased lines like ADSL
  • Internet Tunnel
  • Satellite Links

Example drawing
The following drawing should be used for illustration only. It shows the usage of different types of network links.

Types of links
Short description of different links.

Microwave Links
Microwave Links are relatively inexpensive to install. The range is limited by line of sight. If line of sight is not available a repeater station can be used with two antennas piggybacked. Often another sensor site is a good repeater station. We have in one of our installations a repeater station powered by solar panels and windmills.

Bandwith may be a limiting factor if for example multiple cameras should be transmitted over the same link.

Internet Tunnel
Data to and from sites may be transmitted over an Internet tunnel. The data can be encrypted via several tunnels like, PPTP, IPSEC etc.
Fibreoptical Links
Customers that own their own land, and for medium spans, may deply their own fibre optical cable. Bandwidth is very high.
Leased Lines
Leased lines are provided by telephony companies at different bandwidths.
Satellite Links
For very remote sites we can use satellite links. Bandwidth is usually limited because of the cost in using satellites.
