RTS3000 - Radio Transponder System
The main purpose of the Radio Transponder System is to provide real time monitoring of the physical objects (vessels, cars, etc) in the areas where other similar technologies like AIS can not be used for some reason.

Typical application of RTS3000 can be monitoring of a fleet of small boats, e.g. coastal police boats, or of a group of buoys in a harbor.

RTS3000 can provide various information about the monitored object, but usually the minimum information set is:

  • Identification
  • Position
  • Speed
  • Course

In addition to the above RTS3000 can deliver to the operator application specific information e.g:

  • Voltage
  • Current
  • Contact status
  • Sensor data

General structure
Radio Transponder System has two basic elements – Mobile Transponders (MT) and Base Station (BS). The drawing below shows the general structure of the Radio Transponder System:


Frequencies
The RTS3000 offers a variety of frequencies in the VHF and UHF band which can be tuned locally to suite the customer requirements.

Synthesized radio frequencies allow easy configuration without the need to install channel crystals. Noise Immunity Radio systems operating near electrical and RF noise sources can benefit from the system’s error recovery techniques.

   

Mobile Unit
Functionality of the Mobile Transponder unit defines what data can be monitored in the system in addition to the standard id, position, course and speed.

The Mobile Transponder includes a radio modem, which provides a reliable radio communication layer. The Radio Modem is a sophisticated unit that has flexible data management. The modem supports broadcast, multicast and addressed messaging. The unit includes advanced error correction techniques and provide a clean output of data. Distance Synchronous data recovery and intelligent reverse error correction help extend the usable range out to the very fringes of the system.
The external interfaces of the Mobile Transponder are provided by Transponder Controller, a unit, equipped with serial ports, analogue and digital interfaces. The Mobile Transponder can interface Gyro, Log and other vessel sensors.

Base Station
The Radio Transponder System Base Station uses special firmware for extensive data streaming. The Base Station is connected to the LAN in the Control Centre, where the data from monitored vessels is received. All the messages are provided with the time stamp and source identification which allows extracting the necessary position and other information for every Mobile Transponder Unit.

Every Base Station is equipped with Transponder Controller Software which is providing the necessary interface to VisSim VTMS3000 Vessel Traffic Management System.
The information about units equipped with Mobile Transponders is sent to Target Server where it is integrated with information from radars and other sensors and sent to Traffic Display to be presented in the electronic chart.

All participants of the Radio Transponder System are presented on the screen of Traffic Display using unique symbols which allows for easy identification.

The VTMS3000 offers several own vessel specific features, like marking the vessels equipped with Mobile Transponders to be immune to warnings in the system, etc. The VTMS operator has full control of the Mobile Transponders behaviour on the screen.
